Toronto, Canada,
September 15th
Sadly, what more can be
said, except that my plans remain unchanged. I will continue to Manhattan,
although the logistics may become much more complicated. Before Tuesday, there
were many furnished apartments available. I've not checked since then, but I
tend to think that most, if not all, are now being occupied by those who were
displaced, as well they should.
I had a great time with Paul and Mia in Columbus, Ohio.
Golf at the expansive country club, an extraordinary dinner, smooth sambuca and
fine cigars at their mansion, er, exquisite home. Thanks, guys, I need that,
after spending three weeks 'home on the range'.
It was pleasurable indeed to spend a day with Uncle Danny
in Buffalo. The man is an inspiration. At 77, and after winning two separate
bouts with cancer, he goes on as strong as ever. He continues to sculpt and has
become ensconced in the art studio at the University of Buffalo which provides
him with a private work area.
Additionally, I was fortunate to be able to videotape his
presentation on Ernest Hemingway, which he delivered to a class at UB. A
culmination of years of exhaustive research, it is written in the first person,
and is a captivating insight into the mind of a writer whom many describe as
the greatest American author of the twentieth century.
Later that evening, we enjoyed a delicious Italian dinner
along with his gracious daughters (and my cousins) Lynn and Gail.
Yesterday, I visited Niagara Falls before crossing the
border into Canada. Shortly after Tuesday, eight to Fifteen-hour delays had
been reported for all four bridges. However, I waited a mere twenty minutes,
and the car search was minimal. I guess I looked like a nice honest guy. I hope
my return crossing will be as expeditious.
I'm in Toronto now staying with my brother Dom, his wife
Joan, and her sister Ann who is visiting from England. This house is huge! I'll
relax this weekend, as the next full week in Syracuse may prove to be quite
hectic.
I walked Toronto today (beautiful and sunny weather), and
rode the elevator to the observation level of the CN Tower, the tallest
structure in the world. It was both exhilarating, and a grim reminder.
How are you all doing? Ciao.
